Vitamins and Nutrition

Between foods and vitamins, it is hard to know if we are getting what we need, or if we are overdoing it. If most of our diet if fast food, then it’s a good guess that we need more supplemental nutrition that the person who pays close attention to what she eats. Many people argue that if we change our diets to something like the paeolithic diet that most of our nutritional needs will be handled.

According to the AMA the average person needs a multivitamin every day, but that is about all the AMA says they need. They AMA says that If people are taking large quantities of advanced nutrients (eg: megadoses of vitamin C,) they may be wasting most of those nutrients. The RDA for vitamins is the recommended minimum to stave off disease caused by nutritional deficiency, such as scurvy or rickets. Several authorities argue that much larger amounts are necessary. For example, Linus Pauling arguing for mega doses of vitamin C.

But do we need them? Even those that eat very poorly might be surprised to find out that they really don’t need all of those extra things you can get when you stock up on all of the advanced nutrients. These extra nutritionals can also drain the pocketbook needlessly.
