Many people suffer from heartburn and are constantly on the lookout for an effective heartburn home remedy. Heartburn is a very uncomfortable and potentially painful condition, which the stomach acids reflux into the esophagus. Heartburn is also called dyspepsia, borborygmus, bloating and indigestion. Most heartburn is triggered by eating certain foods but stress is also considered to make heartburn worse.

Heartburn has many associated symptoms with the most common being pain in the neck and shoulders after eating, pressure or pain below the breastbone, feeling of fullness, growling stomach, acid taste in mouth, excessive gas, upper abdominal heaviness, mild nausea and a burning below the breastbone. The exact cause of heartburn is unknown though a weakened sphincter plays and important role as does increased acid production and pressure in the stomach.

If you or someone in your family smokes then this can affect your heartburn. Smoking makes heartburn worse and can actually cause heartburn as the sphincter is weakened due to the nicotine in cigarettes. The smoke from cigarettes also slows down your digestion and when smoking you can swallow small bubbles of air that increase the pressure in your stomach. Besides improving your health you can also stop your heartburn when you stop smoking.

You can monitor what you eat and eliminate the foods that give you heartburn. Many times eliminating onions, cucumbers, cabbage and beans can eliminate heartburn as these foods are associated with gas and can increase the pressure in your digestive tract.

You should always eat upright and to get your digestive tract working at full capacity you can take a walk after eating.  A normal, steady pace is all that is needed.  The idea is to get your metabolic rate up to start processing your food intake. It is not recommended to exercise after eating a large meal or wearing restrictive clothing as these things can make your heartburn worse.

Many recommended medications will absorb any excess acids that may accumulate in the stomach and stimulate your digestion so the window for heartburn to occur is very small. Liquids are recommended as they work faster then a pill or tablet.  An effective heartburn home remedy is to sip peppermint tea.

Ginger is one heartburn home remedy that has been used for stomach and digestion issues for years. It is frequently used as a seasickness remedy. Fiber also absorbs excess acid in the stomach and raw vegetables and fruits should be a large part of your healthy diet anyway. If you find that eating more fruits and veggies isn’t helping you can also get more fiber by using fiber drinks or fiber supplements.  Remember to drink plenty of water when taking extra fiber.
